Was Sotomayor the most qualified?
By H. M. Finnic
Regarding the ongoing controversy over the appointment of Sonia Sotomayor as a Supreme Court Judge, it would appear that she was chosen and confirmed primarily because she is female and Hispanic. Little was emphasized about her crucial qualifications ? which leads one to wonder if she was the most qualified candidate presented or simply the one who satisfied the requirements of gender and race
To emphasize that only a female can be liberal and even-handed would suggest reverse discrimination, which anyone of fair and impartial judgment should refute. After her confirmation, the comment was also made that Hispanics will remember anyone who voted against her ? what a sad commentary, particularly from those who should now feel positive about her appointment. Let us hope that the judge will discourage any such reaction among her constituents.
