MENDOCINO COUNTY ? Plumes of smoke will float over the Ukiah and Redwood Valley areas as three agencies host live fire training from 6 to 9 p.m. Thursday at the Lake Mendocino Dam.
The California Department of Forestry, CalFire and the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers along with area fire departments will remove vegetation from the dam. The clearing will allow access and visibility for required earthquake inspection. Firefighters will also learn from the burn.
Fire agencies will conduct the training burn with tight restrictions for the safety of firefighters and residents. If there”s high wind, fires in the area or other red flags the training exercise will be cancelled.
Spectators are welcome, but the agencies ask that people park at the fish hatchery parking near the base of the dam.
