POTTER VALLEY — Forward Yessica Ayala opened the 2009 season with a hat trick and Taryn Re added two more goals as the Upper Lake Cougars blanked Potter Valley 5-0 in the season opener for both of these varsity girls” soccer teams on Wednesday in Potter Valley.

“I had a lot of girls in new positions and I thought they did excellent,” Upper Lake coach Mike Sheets said.

Upper Lake scored all of its goals in the second half.

Laura Wold, Courtney Havrilla and Shayla Wyman had assists for the Cougars (1-0).

Upper Lake”s new keeper, Annie Martinez, stopped 12 shots on goal.

“Our midfielders worked their butts off today,” said Sheets, who also had high praise for the play of forward Briana Carter.

The Cougars return to action Sept. 10 when they host the Kelseyville Knights.
