ARCATA — The varsity Clear Lake Cardinals try again for their first goal and first victory of the 2009 girls” soccer season today when they travel to Willits for a non-league game that gets under way at 4:30 p.m.

Clear Lake took a step up in competition Friday and Saturday during the Eye of the Tiger Tournament hosted by Arcata High School. The Cardinals were shut out 4-0 by Eureka on Friday before dropping back-to-back 2-0 decisions to Fortuna and Analy on Saturday. All three of Clear Lake”s opponents were 3A schools.

“We went 0-3 against three 3A schools but our other 20 (regular-season) games are against Class A teams,” Clear Lake coach Paul Larrea said. “We”re not going to face defenses as quick as the ones we faced up there the rest of the season.”

Larrea said the Cardinals averaged about six shots on goal during the three-game road trip.

“I thought Elena Tip-ton and Briana Martinez did a good job,” Larrea said of his two forwards.

Clear Lake was the only small-school team in the Eye of the Tiger Tournament.

“It was a good tournament for us to work on some things,” Larrea said. “We played really good defense against some tough teams, so that”s a good sign.”
