MIDDLETOWN — Three close games and a victory for the Middletown Mustangs, 25-22, 29-27, 25-22 winners over the Clear Lake Cardinals in a non-league varsity volleyball match on Wednesday in Middletown.
Morgan D”Amico”s six kills and three blocks paced the Mustangs (1-1), who received three or more kills from a handful of players. Kayla Rob-inson added six kills, one block and one ace, Angela Gattoni added four kills and Jenny McGee had three.
“It was pretty spread out,” Middle-town coach Jennifer Breiner said of the kill distribution. “Last year we relied on a couple of people but not this season. We really don”t have a weak spot.”
Haley Tallman also contributed to Middletown”s first win of the season with four aces and two kills.
Clear Lake was making its season debut and coach Marci Psalmonds said the Cardinals were their own worst enemy at times as they made 16 hitting errors and 13 service errors.
“The physical errors I can handle,” Psalmonds said. “We”ll work on that. It”s the mental errors that kill me and we didn”t have many of those.”
Rylie Gabehart”s six kills paced the Cardinals and Vanessa Tullos had five.
Psalmonds said the defense of Hannah Hoffeditz, who had eight digs, was another plus.
“She did a great job,” Psalmonds said.
Middletown also won the junior varsity match, 25-13, 25-17.
