WILLITS — It was sophomores on parade on Thursday for the Clear Lake Cardinals, 3-1 winners over the Willits Wolverines in non-league varsity girls” soccer action at Willits.
Sophomore forward Telia Paskaly scored twice and had an assist, while sophomore teammate Savannah DeKeyser added an assist as Clear Lake (1-3) registered its first win of the 2009 campaign.
The Cardinals recorded their first goal of the season on a Briana Martinez shot with two minutes left in the first half. It remained 1-0 until Elena Tipton was fouled in the box early in the second half and Paskaly converted a penalty kick to make it 2-0. She scored a few minutes later with a DeKeyser assist for a 3-0 lead.
Willits scored in extra time to make it 3-1. It was the only shot on goal for the Wolverines.
“Logan Brodnansky did a great job on defense and so did Jessica Rentsch and Megan MacDonald, my three backs,” Clear Lake co-coach Paul Larrea said.
“It was a good game for us,” Larrea added. “We came out healthy and rotated a lot of kids into the game.”
Larrea also praised the play of his two sophomore forwards ? Paskaly and DeKeyser.
Clear Lake travels to Roseland Prep in Santa Rosa on Saturday. Action begins at noon. The Cardinals play their first home game Tuesday at 4:30 p.m. against Kelseyville.

Anderson Valley def. Clear Lake
At Boonville, the Anderson Valley Panthers are known for playing airtight defense and the small-school volleyball power made believers out of the Clear Lake Cardinals on Thursday, rallying for a 13-25, 25-17, 25-23, 25-20 non-league victory.
Anderson Valley”s strong play on the defensive end is not exactly breaking news to Marci Psalmonds, who has faced the Panthers many times, both as Clear Lake”s head coach and Upper Lake”s former head coach.
“We took 167 arm swings and had 43 kills,” Psalmonds said. “They were picking everything up.”
The Cardinals (0-2) pounded the ball up front as sophomore Vanessa Tullos recorded a team-best 17 kills while senior Rylie Gabehart had 13. Another sophomore, Jessica Asbury, added six kills and three blocks.
“Vanessa was hitting it hard, as hard as Jesse (Sondag) hit it last year,” Psalmonds said. “But Anderson Valley plays defense.
“It”s discouraging for the girls because they did play well. If we would have played that well last night (against Middletown) we would have won,” Psalmonds added.
The Cardinals need to do a better job at the service line, according to Psalmonds, who said they made nine more service errors.
Clear Lake returns home Tuesday to play Healdsburg.
