MIDDLETOWN — Andre Fernandez, Myles Moffat and Andy Garcia all scored goals, but the Middletown High School defense struggled to stop Cloverdale”s offense on Tuesday as the Eagles beat the host Mustangs 5-3 in non-league varsity boys” soccer action.
Fernandez scored in the first minute of the game to give Middletown (1-1) a 1-0 lead. Cloverdale battled back to take a 2-1 lead by the half and the Eagles were up 3-1 when the Mustangs notched their second goal on a shot by Moffat, with Juan Fernandez providing the assist.
It was 5-2 Cloverdale when Garcia scored the Mustangs” final goal.
Middletown had its chances in the final minutes to pull closer but couldn”t convert.
“We pressured them,” Middletown coach Jivan Dicovski said. “We had some chances. If we played the whole game like the last 10 minutes, the result might have been better.”
Middletown was without its starting keeper who may have a broken wrist, according to Dicovski.
“We still don”t know, we”re waiting to hear,” Dicovski said of the extent of the injury.
Dustin Rudiger drew the start in goal against Cloverdale.

Clear Lake 4, Kelseyville 1
At Lakeport, Lauren Clifton had a goal and an assist to lead the Clear Lake Cardinals past the Kelseyville Knights in non-league action.
It was the first game of the season for the Knights (0-1) and the first day of school for both teams.
“We played like a team on the first day of school in the first half,” Clear Lake co-coach Paul Larrea said of the Cardinals (2-3-1). “We played much better in the second half.”
Kelseyville took a 1-0 lead early in the first half on a goal by Sam Ledesma. Clear Lake pulled even five minutes later on an Elena Tipton goal. Clifton”s goal in the final minute of the half put the Cardinals ahead to stay at 2-1.
Briana Martinez and Briana Dutcher scored in the second half for the Cardinals, who out-shot the Knights 28-6.
“We had a ton of shots and kept the ball at their end all day long,” Larrea said. “We passed the ball much better in the second half.”
Kelseyville nearly scored again late in the second half when Monique Santana banged a hard shot off Clear Lake keeper Mari Jordan. Santana collected the rebound and let go with another shot that was rejected by Jasmine Flores, who came to the aid of the out-of-position Jordan.
“She came out of nowhere,” Larrea said of Flores. “It was a great play.”
Telia Paskaly had two assists for the Cardinals.
Clear Lake tied Roseland Prep 3-3 on Saturday in Santa Rosa. The Cardinals had a 3-1 lead with 10 minutes to play when Roseland Prep rallied for the draw.
“Roseland Prep is a good team,” Larrea said.
Elena Tipton scored twice and Paskaly had the other Clear Lake goal. Tipton and Logan Brodnansky also had assists.
Middletown 3, Cloverdale 0
At Cloverdale, the Middletown Mustangs improved to 3-0 on the season with a shutout victory over the Cloverdale Eagles.
Kiley Agapoff scored the only goal of the first half. Emily Reed made it 2-0 with a penalty kick in the second half, and Brittany Cash, who assisted on Agapoff”s goal, scored later in the half to give the Mustangs some insurance.
“Cloverdale challenged us much more than the first two teams we played,” Middletown coach Louise Owens said. “Our defense did a good job and I”m happy with the progress we”re making.”
Amber Preusser”s play on defense and Natalie Diaz”s play in the midfield also sparked the Mustangs, according to Owens.
Lower Lake 8, Fort Bragg JVs 2
At Lower Lake, Jonesha Beasley scored six times and the Lower Lake Trojans cruised by the Fort Bragg junior varsity squad in non-league action.
“She”s never played soccer in her life,” Lower Lake co-coach Daniel Wieman said of Beasley, a first-year player. “But she”s a natural athlete. She has a solid shot, she”s aggressive and she sees the ball.”
Lower Lake”s passing game sparked the offense, according to Wieman.
“There was some really good passing,” Wieman said. “It really pushed our team to a higher level.”
Baylee Mora and Mayra Nava also had goals for the Trojans, who won their first game of the season.
Naima Kilhamn, a foreign exchange student from Sweden, turned in a solid effort on defense, according to Wieman.
Lower Lake led 5-1 after one half.
Because Fort Bragg had the minimum 11 players in uniform, the Trojans agreed to play a nine-on-nine game.
