UPPER LAKE — Oscar Martinez, Jesse Arroyo, Gabriel Aguilera and Juan Niche scored two goals apiece and the Kelseyville Knights shut out the Upper Lake Cougars 8-0 on Thursday in non-league varsity boys” soccer action at Upper Lake.

It the first win of the season for the Knights (1-1), who have just 14 players in uniform this season.

“I don”t know what happened,” Kelseyville coach Eduardo Ledesma said of the low turnout, including no freshmen on the team.

Kelseyville scored four goals in each half against the Cougars, who had just seven shots on goal.

“I”m very pleased,” Ledesma said of the Knights” effort. “We spent the first half on their side of the field.”

Martinez”s play on offense and Oscar Lopez”s play on defense were keys to the victory, according to Ledesma.

Aguilera also had two assists for the Knights.

Kelseyville opens a five-game homestand Tuesday at home against Cloverdale.

Volleyball

Upper Lake def. South Fork

At Upper Lake, Brandy Claunch had 20 assists and nine aces, both team highs, as the Upper Lake Cougars beat South Fork 25-21, 25-22, 25-15 in a non-league varsity volleyball match.

Katherine Edmonds and Monique Derr also sparked the Cougars (1-1) in their first win of the season. Edmonds had 10 kills and six aces while Derr added nine kills.

The Cougars were without three of their players on Thursday because of sickness and had to call up Bobbie Lynn, a middle hitter, from the junior varsity squad, to field a team of six.

“She played pretty well,” Upper Lake coach Sandy Coat-ney said.

“We still had too many service errors, but we played better than we did against Tomales (on Tuesday),” Coatney said.

JV girls” soccer

Clear Lake 6, Willits 0

At Willits, Jessica Sanders scored twice and had an assist, Reana Hoaglen added two goals, and Kristy Hayes had one goal and two assists as the Clear Lake Cardinals beat the Willits Wolverines in junior varsity girls” soccer action.

Clear Lake is 4-1-1.

Emily Norwood had the Cardinals” other goal.

Clear Lake led 2-0 at the half and did not allow a shot on goal.
