KELSEYVILLE — It started out well enough, but the Kelseyville Knights didn”t score after the first quarter and fell 48-7 to the Berean Christian Eagles in non-league varsity football action on Friday night in Kelseyville.
It was the season opener for the Knights (0-1), who lost by nearly the same score — 43-7 — to the Eagles” in last year”s opener at Walnut Creek.
“We did play better against them this year even if the score doesn”t reflect that,” Kelseyville coach Thad Owens said. “I saw some good things, but I was disappointed with the overall effort across the board for our entire program. I didn”t see a lot of heart.”
Berean Christian (2-0) scored on a 1-yard run and a 31-yard pass in the first quarter to go up 14-0. The Knights appeared to get back into the game at that point when Nick Rodrigues scored on a 1-yard run and Rodrigo Zuniga booted the extra point to make it 14-7.
But the Eagles, with a big assist from the Knights, took control of the game with a 20-point second quarter. In fact, Berean Christian ran off the game”s final 34 points.
“The first quarter it looked like we were gonna run with them,” Owens said. “I was pretty happy with the way things were shaping up, but then it got away from us.
“We had a couple of key runs called back for stupid penalties, things we don”t need to be doing,” Owens added. “We had two long runs inside the 10 called back.”
The Knights also lost jack-of-all trades Mike Davis to a knee injury as he was making a catch. Davis did a little bit of everything against Berean Christian, running for 57 yards and passing for 24. He also caught a 4-yard pass, the play on which he sustained his knee injury.
Kelseyville”s offense also turned the ball over twice.
The Knights also lost the junior varsity game 21-14.
