CLEARLAKE ? The Clearlake City Council moved forward on a couple of road improvement projects Thursday. The council awarded contracts for a slide repair project on Lakeshore Drive at San Joaquin Extension and another for engineering design services for improvements on Dam Road.

Fedco Construction was the low bidder in the Lakeshore/San Joaquin slide repair project. The council authorized the bid award in the amount of $197,507. The project is being funded primarily through a FEMA grant, which will reimburse the city 87.5 percent of the repair costs. The city will be responsible for 12.5 percent of the project”s cost.

The council also authorized City Administrator Dale Neiman to execute an agreement with Coastland Civil Engineering for engineering design services for the Dam Road Improvement Project. According to Neiman, the project is entirely funded by the federal government.

The project consists of widening a 700 foot section of Dam Road to provide a half mile of Class II bikeway striping. The project area is located within boundaries of archeological site CA-Lak-510, which contributes to the National Register of Historic Places Anderson Marsh Archeological District. Due to historic sensitivity, disturbance of archeological soils shall be avoided where possible. If intact archeological site soils cannot be avoided then a data recovery program will take place to remove the information contained in that portions of the site scheduled for destruction.

According to Coastland, the recovery program will involve hand excavation, sifting, washing, sorting, cataloging, analysis and reporting on what is found. The city”s contract for services with Coastland is not to exceed $21,510.
