Jermany had 208 yards on nine carries and two TDs in his first varsity start, and sophomore Roy Percoats had 135 yards on 11 carries and a TD. James O”Connor led Upper Lake with 93 yards on 11 carries in a win over Potter Valley.

Highlights
Special teams — Middletown snapped a punt out of the end zone for a safety, two points that figured prominently at the time in a 23-15 loss to Salesian. Pierce returned a kickoff for a touchdown against Clear Lake.
Defense — Upper Lake”s Jacob Armstrong scored the Cougars” first points of the season with a 50-yard interception return in the second quarter against Potter Valley. Clear Lake”s Ryan Richardson picked off his first two passes of the season after intercepting a Lake County-best eight last season. Ryan Lunas led the Cardinals with eight tackles against Pierce.
Omitted — The score in Clear Lake”s 12-0 junior varsity victory over Pierce was inadvertently omitted from the game box appearing in Saturday”s edition of the Record-Bee.
Speaking of JVs — Junior varsity coaches interested in reporting their results to the newspaper should do so on either Monday or Tuesday. It”s too late after that. All JV results received will be printed. If the JV coaches don”t call, you won”t read about it.
Typical week one — All four of the Friday night games went late because of a lot of penalties and, in most cases, a lot of scoring.
Good example of … — The “it”s never over ”til it”s over cliche” … see Denver”s 12-7 win over Cincinnati on Sunday.
A little of this, a little of that — Before sustaining a knee injury on a pass reception Friday night against Berean Christian, Kelseyville”s Mike Davis had passed for 24 yards and rushed for 57. He was hurt at the end of a four-yard reception.
Breaking some big ones — Lower Lake”s E.J. Jermany scored on runs 93 and 84 yards against John Swett. Meanwhile, teammate Roy Percoats broke off an 80-yard TD run. In Clear Lake”s win over Pierce, two of Kevin Burt”s three touchdowns came on runs of 49 and 69 yards. Ryan Lunas added a 68-yard TD burst.
Burt”s gem — According to our records, Kevin Burt”s 292 yards against Pierce was a single-game rushing record for the Cardinals. The county record, if you”re wondering, is 389 yards by Jared Holley of Kelseyville in 1998.
Maybe it wasn”t a win but … — “I was pretty proud of them,” Middletown coach Bill Foltmer said of his players after a 23-15 loss to Salesian. “By the fourth quarter momentum was pretty much in our favor and we knocked on the door twice and couldn”t score.”

Just a hope and a prayer — That the 49ers” offense turns out to be a whole lot better than the San Francisco Giants.”
Congrats — To Middletown High School varsity girls” soccer coach Louise Owens, who is expecting her first child. Proud dad Thad is the varsity football coach at Kelseyville.
Not many mistakes — Unlike most of the county”s teams on week one, the Middletown Mustangs played a clean football game against Salesian, turning the ball over only once and committing relatively few penalties.
