FORT BRAGG — The Clear Lake High School varsity boys” soccer team belatedly opened its season on Tuesday with a 6-1 non-league loss to the Fort Bragg Timberwolves in Fort Bragg.
Clear Lake nearly canceled its season two weeks ago because of a lack of players, but coach Chris Cortez said the Cardinals were up to 15 players as of Tuesday.
Jorge Garcia scored the Cardinals” lone goal, that coming in the second half. Juan Alvarado had the assist.
“They were trying to get a feel for each other out on the field,” Cortez said. “Hopefully in our next game they”ll be communicating a little better.”
Keeper Reymundo Gregoria turned in a strong effort for the Cardinals (0-1), according to Cortez.
Summing up his team”s initial effort of 2009, Cortez said, “They were all excited, all motivated. Some of them showed a lot of heart.”
Clear Lake travels to Kelseyville today.
