KELSEYVILLE — The Kelseyville High School junior varsity football team couldn”t quite battle back from a 21-0 deficit in its season-opening 21-14 loss to Berean Christian on Friday night in Kelseyville.
Kelseyville (0-1) trailed 21-0 entering the final period. Two touchdown runs by Zack Krohn and a Devin Baker conversion run following the first score cut the Eagles” lead to just seven points. The Knights were on the move again late in the quarter, driving into Berean Christian territory, but an interception ended their bid for a possible victory.
“The kids showed a lot of heart to stick in the game like that,” Kelseyville coach Rob Ishihara said.
Quarterback Jake Youngs had a couple of key runs in the fourth quarter, according to Ishihara, who said his first-string signal caller is moving up to the varsity this week.
“We”re going to miss him,” Ishihara said.
Ishihara also praised the play of Krohn and Baker, who are filling in for injured running back Geno Poloni (collarbone) on offense, and the play of cornerback John Mark Reagan.
“He had some big tackles,” Ishihara said of Reagan.
Kelseyville travels to Cloverdale on Friday. Kickoff is 5:30 p.m.
