KELSEYVILLE — Oscar Martinez added three more goals to his growing season tally and the Kelseyville Knights scored early and often in the first half and beat the Clear Lake Cardinals 7-0 in a non-league varsity boys” soccer game at Kelseyville.

“I wanted to come out strong,” Kelseyville coach Eduardo Ledesma said.

No problem. Martinez scored his first two goals before most fans could find a seat and the Knights built a 5-0 first-half lead.

“He”s got the magic,” Ledesma said of Martinez, who now has seven goals in his last three games.

Kelseyville (3-1) also received two goals from Juan Ninche and single goals from Edgar Lozano and Jesse Arroyo. Ninche also had an assist.

Kelseyville”s defense limited Clear Lake, playing only its second game, to three shots on goal in the first half. The Cardinals (0-2) were able to generate a bit more offensive pressure in the second half against a mix of Kelseyville starters and reserves, according to Ledesma, who is now up to 18 players after beginning the season with just a dozen.

“They”ve been working hard,” Ledesma said after his team”s third straight victory.

Standouts on defense for the Knights were halfbacks Jorge Mendez and Glenn Mostin, according to Ledesma.

Kelseyville is home Tuesday to play St. Helena.
