KELSEYVILLE — When teams from Lakeport and Kelseyville meet on the volleyball court Thursday in Kelseyville, it won”t be just another match for bragging rights. There”s a whole lot more at stake this time around.

Play It In Pink, a fundraiser for breast cancer research, will feature games between teams from Kelseyville and Clear Lake high schools and Mountain Vista and Terrace middle schools.

According to the United Nations World Health Organization, more than 500,000 people worldwide die from breast cancer every year.

Many of the 90 participating players and eight participating coaches in Thursday”s fundraiser understand the impact of this disease both through personal experience and connections with family members who have been diagnosed. The teams are currently seeking donations, with sponsors being listed on pink volleyballs. The team that raises the most money will win the Play It In Pink perpetual trophy along with the pink game ball.

The participating players will wear pink shirts ? 90 in all ? featuring designs by Debbie Ingalls of Kelseyville High School and donated by T&B Sports of Santa Rosa. Two women referees, also wearing pink, will officiate the high school games. Pink refreshments, including pink lemonade and cotton candy, will be on sale at the snack bar. All gate proceeds will be added to the teams” donations and sent to breast cancer research.

Fans are encouraged to wear pink to the matches. The first match features Terrace Middle School”s sixth- and seventh-grade teams against Mountain Vista Middle School”s B team at 3:30 p.m., followed by Terrace Middle School”s eighth-grade team vs. Mountain Vista Middle School”s A team at 4:30 p.m. Next up is the Kelseyville High junior varsity team against the Clear Lake High JV team at 5:30 p.m., and the final match pairs the Clear Lake High and Kelseyville High varsity squads at 6:30 p.m.
