LOWER LAKE — Too many missed tackles and too much Kris Farinha made it a long night for the Lower Lake Trojans, 34-14 losers to the St. Vincent Mustangs on Friday night in a North Central League I interlock varsity football game at Lower Lake.

Lower Lake”s defense proved to be no obstacle for the Mustangs (2-0), winners in 18 of their last 20 games.

“We were horrendous in the open field, we”re just not tackling people,” Lower Lake coach Stan Weiper said. “The offense is OK but we need to make a massive turnaround on defense. We had trouble covering the pass and the run.”

Farinha, a three-year varsity veteran, scored on runs of 1-yard in the first quarter and 1 and 15 yards in the fourth quarter for the Mustangs.

St. Vincent grabbed a 7-0 lead on a Josh Wheless-6-yard pass to Jeff Kesler in the opening quarter. Lower Lake (0-2) closed to 7-6 on a 4-yard run by E.J. Jermany, but the Mustangs scored the game”s next 20 points to go up 27-6.

Lower Lake”s Roy Percoats rushed for a team-leading 68 yards, including a 1-yard TD run in the fourth quarter. Jermany added 53 yards on 17 carries.

“We have a lot of work to do before we”re competitive,” Weiper said.
