CLOVERDALE — Three Kelseyville turnovers in the first quarter led to 21 Cloverdale points and the Eagles beat the visiting Knights 36-10 in a North Central League I interlock varsity football game Friday night in Cloverdale.

“We played with a lot of heart but also with a lot of mistakes,” Kelseyville coach Thad Owens said. “You can”t have that many mistakes and win games.”

Cloverdale (2-0) returned a Mike Allen interception for one score in the first quarter. Two other Kelseyville turnovers — another interception and a lost fumble — set up two more touchdowns as the Eagles moved ahead 21-0.

“After that we were trying to play football from behind, which is tough,” Owens said.

Kelseyville closed to 21-7 on a Steven Grossner 30-yard run in the second quarter. The Eagles put the game away with 15 third-quarter points for a 36-7 lead.

Kelseyville”s Tony Mendez kicked a 31-yard field goal in the fourth quarter to make it 31-10.

The Knights (0-2) forced two turnovers and sacked Cloverdale”s quarterback five times, including two sacks each by Allen and Jordan Brown.

Grossner was Kelsey-ville”s leading rusher with 59 yards on seven carries. Nick Rodrigues added 52 yards on 11 carries.
