MIDDLETOWN — Emily Reed scored in the 18th minute of the first half and the Middletown High School defense made that goal stand up in a 1-0 varsity girls” soccer victory over the Cloverdale Eagles on a red-hot Tuesday afternoon in Middletown.
The Mustangs (4-1) were at less than full strength with three girls out sick and two others absent because of injuries.
“We did a great job with what we had,” Middletown coach Louise Owens said.
With a limited bench to call on, Owens said the near triple-digit heat began to take its toll on the short-handed Mustangs in the second half.
“They dug down deep and gave it everything they had,” Owens said.
Middletown out-shot Cloverdale 12-6.
Taylor Sloan assisted on Reed”s game-winning goal.

Clear Lake 2, Willits 0
At Lakeport, deuces were wild for the Clear Lake Cardinals in their shutout win over the Willits Wolverines.
Elena Tipton scored twice in the second half for the Cardinals (5-5-1), Logan Brodnansky had both assists, and Clear Lake won without two starters in the lineup ?keeper Mari Jordan and forward Telia Paskaly.
Savannah DeKeyser, a sophomore, filled in at keeper and turned in a strong performance for the Cardinals, who out-shot the Wolverines 22-6.
“She had some nice, good kicks to get the ball forward to our offense,” Clear Lake co-coach Paul Larrea said. “And she had a nice save on one ball out in front of the frame.”
Briana Dutcher rep-laced DeKeyer at the wing and also played well, according to Larrea.
Other Clear Lake standouts were Megan MacDonald and Jasmine Flores, who was kicked in the face during the game, bending the frame on her glasses. The Willits player responsible was issued a yellow card and then a red card for arguing the call.
Tipton, Brodnansky and Dutcher all scored goals in Clear Lake”s 3-1 win Saturday against Rincon Valley Christian.
Upper Lake 6, Lower Lake 1
At Lower Lake, Jon-esha Beasley scored a goal for the Lower Lake Trojans in their non-league loss to the Upper Lake Cougars.
Upper Lake (3-2) led 4-1 after the first half.
“We were all out of sync, I don”t know why,” Lower Lake co-coach Nina Gibson said. “The heat didn”t help.”
Standouts for the Tro-jans were Katie Swalde, Natalia Frias and Naima Kilhamn, according to Gibson.
“Katie did a great job,” Gibson said.
Alexis Buchholz scored her first two goals of the season for Upper Lake and teammates Jojo Stifter and Amanda McQueen also had their first goals of the year. The Cougars also received goals from Laura Wold and Shayla Wyman.
“It was so hot, both teams were showing the effects of the heat,” said Upper Lake coach Mike Sheets, who was pleased with the effort of his players and the conduct of both teams.
“They had a really good game,” Sheets said of the Cougars. “And both teams showed good sportsmanship.”
