MIDDLETOWN — Brittany Cash scored two first-half goals and the Middletown defense made them stand up in a 2-1 win over the Clear Lake Cardinals on Thursday in a North Central League I interlock varsity girls” soccer game.
The rivalry between the two teams is quickly becoming of the county”s best, according to Middletown coach Louise Owens.
“They are a good team, but they are physical,” Owens said. “I”m sure they”ll say the same about us.”
Though shorthanded for the game, the Mustangs (6-1) were able to hold their own against the Cardinals (5-6-1).
“We were pretty dinged up going into the game but my girls are pretty determined,” Owens said.
Cash, a sophomore forward, scored in the third and 34th minutes of the first half to give Middletown a 2-0 lead. Both goals came on breakaways.
“She”s got some wheels and if she gets a step on you, there aren”t many defenders who can run her down,” Owens said.
Cash just missed a hat trick in the second half, according to Owens.
Elena Tipton scored Clear Lake”s goal in the 59th minute.
Kiley Agapoff, who replaced injured starter Natalie Diaz in the midfield, turned in a strong performance for the Mustangs, according to Owens.
“My entire defense did a phenomenal job,” Owens said.
While it was hot again on Thursday, Owens said it didn”t seem to affect either team.
“It was hot, but not like it was on Tuesday,” Owens said.
