KELSEYVILLE — All you have to do is wind up Oscar Martinez and let him go.
Martinez, a sophomore forward, scored five more goals on Thursday as the Kelseyville Knights pounded the Upper Lake Cougars 12-1 in a North Central League I interlock varsity boys” soccer game at Kelseyville.
Kelseyville (4-1-1) scored six goals in each half despite emptying its bench against Upper Lake. Martinez scored three times in the first half and twice in the second half.
Josh Espinoza, a transfer from Clear Lake, added three goals and Juan Ninche had two for Kelseyville. Gabriel Aguilera had a goal and an assist.

Clear Lake 2, Middletown 1
At Lakeport, Nate Secrest scored on a corner kick and Adrian Rodriguez connected on a penalty kick to lift the Clear Lake Cardinals to their first victory of the season.
Middletown scored the only goal in the first half on a Juan Fernandez kick.
Diego Alvarado”s play in the Clear Lake net was key to the Cardinals” victory, according to Clear Lake coach Chris Cortez.
Clear Lake is 1-3 on the season.
Middletown, now 2-4, didn”t take advantage of its scoring opportunities, according to coach Jivan Dicovski.
“We had a lot of chances,” Dicovski said. “We missed five one-on-ones.”
Girls” soccer
Upper Lake 4, Kelseyville 2
At Kelseyville, Upper Lake scored the final three goals to erase a 2-1 Kelseyville lead and beat the Knights in NCL I interlock play.
The first half ended in a 1-1 tie. Monique Santana scored the second of her two goals in the second half to give the Knights (0-6) a 2-1 lead, but the Cougars (4-2) rallied back.
Brianna Carter scored twice for Upper Lake and Yessica Ayala and Alexxis Buchholz each added a goal.
“She played extremely well,” Kelseyville coach Mark Andre said of Santana, who was one of the few Knights veterans around by game”s end.
Three other Kelsey-ville players had to leave the game with injuries, including Sam Ledesma (knee) and Amanda Santana (shin). Another took a ball in the eye and had to go to the hospital, according to Andre.
Though the Knights are still looking for their first win, they are improving, according to Andre.
“It”s getting better,” he said.
“My offense and defense both did very well tonight,” Upper Lake coach Mike Sheets said. “The conditioning we”ve been doing has been paying off.”
Volleyball
Upper Lake def. Fort Bragg
At Upper Lake, Monique Derr, Emily Knispel and Katherine Edmonds turned in solid performances as the Upper Lake Cougars defeated the Fort Bragg Timberwolves 25-16, 25-19, 16-25, 25-15 in NCL I interlock play.
Derr had five kills, six aces and 18 digs for the Cougars, Knispel contributed nine kills, five aces and 14 digs, and Edmonds had five kills, six aces and five assists.
“The girls did look pretty good,” Upper Lake coach Sandy Coatney said. “We cut down on our hitting errors and did better with our service errors. The hustle was really good.”
St. Helena def. Lower Lake
At Lower Lake, powerhouse St. Helena, returning nearly its entire lineup from last season”s NCL I South title run, overpowered the Lower Lake Trojans 25-15, 25-14, 25-16.
“They are incredible,” Lower Lake coach Danessa Udy said of the Saints. “But we can play better than we played.
“I think my girls were a little bit shellshocked. We had a hard time digging and it really weighed on our confidence.”
Tashee Denson led the Trojans with seven kills and two blocks.
“She did great,” Udy said.
St. Vincent def. Middletown
At Petaluma, Middle-town won the first game but St. Vincent captured the next three to take this NCL I interlock match. Scores were not available.
Kayla Robinson had five kills, two blocks and one ace for Middletown and Haley Tallman added four kills and three aces.
“We did well in the first game, really well,” Middletown coach Jennifer Breiner said.
“We just had too many hitting errors in the third and fourth games. Our hitting was just not there.”
