SAN FRANCISCO ? On Saturday, San Francisco police arrested the man who escaped from the Lake County Jail almost three weeks earlier.

Police booked Herbert Preston, 22, of Clearlake, into the San Francisco County Jail on suspicion of misdemeanor illegal possession of a vehicle master key, giving false identification to a police officer and a warrant for his escape, according to a Lake County Sheriff”s Office press release.

Lake County Jail last accounted for Preston about 9 a.m. Sept. 6 as he was heading to church services with other inmates, according to the sheriff”s office. Preston escaped and was seen about an hour later swimming and getting out of Clear Lake near Lafferty Road in north Lakeport.

The sheriff”s office could not detail Preston”s arrest or how he got to San Francisco. Clearlake police arrested Preston July 29 on suspicion of vehicle theft, receiving stolen property and hit and run, according to the sheriff”s office. Preston has a pending warrant in Sonoma County and an open case with the Santa Rosa Police Department. Preston will stay in a San Francisco jail until he”s extradited back to Lake County for escape and prior charges, the sheriff”s office stated.
