FORT BRAGG — Up the hill, down the hill. Welcome to Fort Bragg High School”s 2.9-mile cross country course.

Fort Bragg hosted Cloverdale, Clear Lake and Middletown in a Coastal Mountain Conference meet on a clear and breezy Wednesday on the Mendocino County coast.

“It”s a long, uphill course,” Clear Lake coach Peter Stanley said. “One and a half miles up and one and a half miles down. The kids don”t complain about it much. They like the downhill.”

The course does offer an unobstructed view of the last half-mile, according to Stanley.

“There are a lot of duels at the end and you can see them,” he said.

Jesse Lee of Cloverdale won the varsity boys” race in 19 minutes, 9 seconds, pulling ahead of runner-up Mitchell Holcomb of Fort Bragg (19:14) the last quarter-mile. Jarrod Rudy of Middletown finished third in 19:59, the only runner besides Lee and Holcomb to crack the 20-minute mark.

In team scoring, Cloverdale defeated Middletown 20-41 and Fort Bragg beat Clear Lake 15-40.

Other top Lake County finishes went to Middletown”s Alejandro Maldonodo, 11th in 21:47, and Clear Lake”s Jeffrey Mulligan, 15th in 22:19.

“My guys were all close to each other running together as a team,” Stanley said. “We don”t have any stars.”

Kyle Donald and Erik Hagberg of Clear Lake finished 16th and 17th at 22:23 and 22:43, respectively.

Middletown”s Chris Nance was 20th at 23:40.

Varsity girls

Whitney Edens of Cloverdale cruised to the finish line in 23:25 in the varsity girls” race. Middletown”s Miriam Lane was next at 23:48, Fort Bragg”s Alexandra Sciocchetti was third in 23:56, Clear Lake”s Jessica Hensen placed fourth in 25:59; and Cloverdale”s Beth Maroni was fifth in 26:14.

Cloverdale beat Middletown 25-30 and Clear Lake edged Fort Bragg 27-28.

“She”s obviously got a lot of talent,” Stanley said of Hensen, who missed her last race because of an injury. “She missed a lot of practice coming off her injury but still ran well today.”

Also cracking the top 10 were seventh-place finisher Amber Hart of Middletown (26:33) and teammate Amber Ramponi, who was eighth in 27:49. In ninth place was Chloe Rojas of Clear Lake at 27:42.
