UPPER LAKE — The Upper Lake Cougars won a game but lost their best player in the process on Friday as they defeated the Potter Valley Bearcats 2-1 in non-league varsity girls” soccer action at Upper Lake.
Yessica Ayala, the team”s leading scorer, sustained a right ankle injury, the severity of which coach Mike Sheets won”t know until Ayala visits the doctor.
“It”s been a reoccurring thing for her,” Sheets. “She hurt the same ankle last year. I just hope she”s OK and it”s not too bad.”
Ayala was on a breakaway when she hit the turf.
“She went down screaming,” Sheets said.
Upper Lake (5-3) snapped a 1-1 tie on Laura Wold”s goal midway through the second half. The Cougars tied the game earlier in the half on a Tanya Carter goal.
Potter Valley led 1-0 after the first half.
Upper Lake keeper Annie Martinez made a handful of saves to preserve the Cougars” win.
“Our offense and defense did a good job,” Sheets said.
Upper Lake hosts Willits on Monday.
