UPPER LAKE — Her ankle heavily taped, Yessica Ayala scored a goal and assisted on two others Monday as the Upper Lake Cougars beat Willits 4-2 in a North Central League I interlock girls” soccer game at Upper Lake.

Ayala aggravated a previous injury in the Cougars” 2-1 win over Potter Valley on Friday and her availability for Willits was in question.

Freshman Shayla Wyman scored two goals and Briana Carter added another for the Cougars (5-3), who led 2-1 after one half.

Upper Lake spent nearly the entire game on Willits” side of the field and had 30 shots on goal.

Keeper Annie Mart-inez stopped seven Willits shots. Other Upper Lake standouts were fullback Jamie Henry and midfielders Jojo Stifter and Amanda McQueen.

“They (Stifter and McQueen) did a great job of moving the ball forward,” Upper Lake coach Mike Sheets said.

Havrilla, the team”s stopper, uncorked a long kick that actually led to a goal by Wyman.
