SANTA ROSA ? State Assemblywoman Noreen Evans wants to fix the budget, pull the state out of the recession and invest in education if she is elected to the 2010 seat for California Senate district two.
Evans would represent Lake, Mendocino, Napa and Humboldt counties and parts of Sonoma and Solano counties in district two. The primary election for the state Senate Democratic nomination will be in June.
“We need to bring California back to its promise of higher education and good prospects for our residents,” Evans said.
Evans currently represents Napa County and parts of Sonoma and Solano counties in her third term as district seven state assemblywoman.
State Senator Pat Wiggins will not seek a second term in district two and has announced her support of Evans.
Evans has served five years on the state Assembly and about 12 in Santa Rosa as a councilwoman and planning commissioner, she said.
She is the chair of the Assembly Budget Committee and the Assembly Select Committee on Wine and is a member of three other legislative committees.
Evans said she welcomes a debate with any competitors, including Joanne Sanders, a Sonoma city councilwoman.
The assemblywoman will attend The Geysers ribbon-cutting ceremony Oct. 14 in Middletown and the Lake County Democratic Party barbecue Oct. 17 in Clearlake, she said.
Evans wants to change the requirement so that the state legislature can pass the budget without a two-thirds vote.
“It makes passing a budget, which should be simple to do, virtually impossible to do,” Evans said.
Because the state fails at setting a budget, counties, cities and schools fail too, Evans said.
“I think the big challenge in Lake County is the challenge faced by most other counties ? that”s jobs,” Evans said. “The sooner we bring California back to fiscal health, the sooner we”ll bring our economic engine to our local community and develop jobs.”
