LAKEPORT ? The Lakeport city attorney told staff Tuesday at the Lakeport City Council meeting to give notice and take down a gate at Willow Point RV & Campground if it blocks police and fire access.

Councilman Roy Parmentier brought up the issue of the campground, which Fire Chief Ken Wells said poses a risk because fire personnel can”t enter through the closed gate.

“If it”s a health and safety issue, take it down,” city attorney Steven Brookes said.

Brookes, Wells and council members said a delay in safety response could result in a death.

“We shouldn”t be handicapped by going the long way around or on a bridge,” Brookes said.

Fire crews responding to an emergency at the campground have to go the long way to enter through another gate or risk driving heavy equipment on a bridge that may not handle the weight, Wells said.

“I”m with Steve,” Wells said. “Let”s go get a winch and tear it down.”

Council member Bob Rumfelt presented Ron Raetz with a proclamation for his service to the Westside Community Park Committee and Lakeport.

Council members asked staff to investigate how to help a resident who is responsible for and underground fuel storage tank contractors uncovered when working on the city”s Martin-Forbes Street Sidewalk Improvement Project. Part of the tank is in the city right-of-way, but most of it is under the resident”s property, making the removal cost of about $5,500 his responsibility, city engineer Scott Harter said.

The council unanimously approved an application for Lakeport Elementary to hold its annual Halloween Parade from 12:30 to 1:15 p.m. Oct. 30 on Main Street.

Council members also voted to allow the Clearlake Road Riders to have a Toy Run Parade from 11 to 11:15 a.m. Dec. 6 in Lakeport.

The council discussed having a Habitat for Humanity site in Lakeport and will have a representative give a presentation at a council meeting.

The city will give Kmart a two-week notice to clean up a drainage site in order to improve drainage problems of Pier 1900.
