LAKEPORT — Quarterback Kyle Brown ran for one touchdown and passed for another on Friday as the Middletown Mustangs used a big fourth quarter to finish off the Clear Lake Cardinals, 32-6, in a North Central League I interlock junior varsity football game at Don Owens Stadium in Lakeport.
Middletown (4-1) led 12-0 after one quarter and didn”t score again until the fourth quarter when Brown hooked up with Nick Delia on an 87-yard touchdown pass. Nolan Tkachenko added the conversion run to give the Mustangs a 20-0 lead.
Later in the quarter, Danny Hulme ran 32 yards for another score and Nicolai Bernal returned an interception 42 yards for a touchdown to make it 32-0.
Clear Lake (3-2) scored in the closing seconds on a pass play.
D.J. Brookshire”s 5-yard run opened the scoring for the Mustangs. Brown went over the goal line from a yard out later in the first quarter to make it 12-0.
Brookshire was the Mustangs” leading rusher with 72 yards on seven carries and Tkachenko added 38 yards on five carries. Brown was 4-for-12 passing for 151 yards. Brookshire caught three passes for 64 yards.
On defense, Paul Rogers led the Mustangs with four unassisted tackles, six assists and a sack. Brandon Breeden added three tackles and six assists, and Bernal had five tackles, four assists, a sack and an interception. Ben Pike also had an interception.
The Mustangs wrap up their NCL I interlock schedule Friday at home against St. Helena at 5:30 p.m. Clear Lake opens its NCL I South schedule Friday in Cloverdale at 5:30 p.m.
