MENDOCINO NATIONAL FOREST ? The U.S. Forest Service will lift fire restrictions today in the Mendocino National Forest because of rain and lower temperatures.

People with valid California Campfire Permits will be able to have fires outside designated campgrounds including in the wilderness, the U.S. Forest Service reported.

The Forest Service had started fire restrictions July 31 because of fire danger with hot and dry weather.

“Despite the change in weather, fire season is not officially over,” the Forest Service reported.

Forest Service staff asks that visitors be careful when using campfires, charcoal fires and gas stoves. According to the Forest Service, people should: clear all flammable material away from the fire by 5 feet minimum in all directions to prevent the fire from escaping; have a shovel available in preparation to extinguish the campfire; have a responsible person present at all times; extinguish the fire with water, drowning it, stirring the coals and ash, feeling for heat or warm spots and continue until the coals and ash are cold.

Campers can get campfire permits free at any Forest Service, Bureau of Land Management or CalFire office.

For information call the Forest Service at 530-934-3316.
