What are his accomplishments?
By Christal B. Coatney
I woke up the other morning to the same news that a lot of other people did ? President Obama winning the Nobel Peace Prize. And, like many others, including leaders from other countries, I asked “Why?” Isn”t the peace prize supposed to be for people who have accomplished really great things in their lifetime?
The foundation”s reason for giving it to Mr. Obama was because of his extraordinary efforts to strengthen international diplomacy and cooperation between peoples. I”m sorry, but isn”t that what all presidents have been striving to do since World War I?
Another reason I heard he was being given the prize was because he had given people hope. This is ridiculous. I know plenty of people who give hope and the world doesn”t know a thing about them, but I guess that”s the difference. Mr. Obama is President. He cannot help but be in the spotlight, especially for something like this. I applaud the fact that he donated the prize money to charity and kudos to him for getting it, but there are other, more deserving people out there.
I feel that the foundation was just not being honest; they gave it to the president because, let”s face it, he is a man of color. The first man of color in this nation”s history to be president. Is that enough to honestly win him the Nobel? If not, wait until he does something really amazing and then give it to him for that achievement; do not give it to him for the flimsy reason that he gives people hope.
