WILLITS — Willits scored on a 2-yard run with 1:35 remaining in the game to upset the Kelseyville Knights 20-16 and snap a 15-game losing streak on Friday night at Maize Field in Willits.

The North Central League League I North varsity football opener for both teams came down to a long, sustained drive by the Wolverines (1-0, 1-5) that wiped out a 16-12 Kelseyville lead.

The Knights moved the ball inside Willits” 35-yard line in the final seconds before running out of time.

“I just didn”t have them ready,” Kelseyville coach Thad Owens said. “I didn”t make the adjustments with the personnel that I had available to play.”

Steven Grossner”s 62-yard interception return for a touchdown in the third quarter gave the Knights a 16-12 lead going into the fourth quarter. Grossner also scored Kelseyville”s first touchdown on a 27-yard run in the second quarter.

All three of Willits” touchdowns were the result of time-consuming drives, according to Owens.

“Their best defense was their offense,” Owens said.

Willits led 12-9 at halftime.

The 20 points scored by the Wolverines was a season high.

Kelseyville remains on the road next Friday to play Lower Lake (0-1, 1-5). The Trojans lost 49-0 in their North opener at Fort Bragg.
