I think Katy Sweeny should be commended for her guts and courage of her convictions with respect to her commentary on the “Tools and techniques” of family planning. In a world that has the attitude toward sex it seems to, and with population gone wild, we need far more of this!
I wish she had thought to mention that, at last count, it costs better than $200,000 to raise a child to age 18. To me, that is a large commitment to be forced to make for an “accident.”
World population is approaching seven billion. A recent report suggests that world food production must increase 70 percent to feed the population the world will have by 2050. Not going to be easy, no matter what!
Our county is having discussions about GMOs and whether they should be permitted. If food production is to increase ? particularly with warming ? I suspect we are going to need all the help and technology available. From the 1920s on, almost miraculous increases in food production have been made possible through hybridization; corn, rice and wheat are good examples, but it takes a lot of years. I need to have someone explain to me how genetic modification is different from hybridization-with-a-time-machine.
Or, maybe the solution is to be able to smile while people starve!
