ARCATA — The Clear Lake Cardinals earned a split of their round-robin junior varsity girls” soccer doubleheader on Saturday against Fortuna and Arcata at Arcata High School.
Clear Lake defeated Fortuna 7-3 behind three goals from Kristy Hayes in the first game and came back later in the day to drop a 3-1 decision to Arcata, only the Cardinals” third loss in 13 games this season.
Against Fortuna, Amely Ballesteros, Emily Norwood, Nadine Bradley and Jennifer Hays also scored goals. Ballesteros and Kristen McKinney also had assists.
Against Arcata, Sav-annah DeKeyser scored the lone goal for Clear Lake (9-3-1). Jessica Sanders had an assist.
“We played really well and I think the girls had a fun time,” Clear Lake coach Alice Holmes said.
Rain earlier in the week and again during Saturday”s action didn”t make for ideal playing conditions, according to Holmes.
“We played in a mud box,” she said. “My keeper by the end of the second game was so covered with mud you couldn”t recognize the colors of her uniform.”
Clear Lake travels to Fort Bragg today.
