LAKE COUNTY ? With a proclamation from the Board of Supervisors, Lake County will take part in National Lead Poisoning Prevention Week continuing through Saturday.

Lead-based paint and dust contaminated with lead are the most common ways children are exposed to the element, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. High levels of lead in children”s blood can cause decreased IQ, academic failure and behavioral problems.

Lake County Health Officer Dr. Karen Tait will participate in the local effort.

“The purpose of this campaign is to remind parents that lead poisoning can be detrimental to young children”s health and development,” Tait said in a press release. “It”s important for parents to ask their child”s medical provider about lead testing.”

Easter Seals, a nonprofit health advocate, aims to help families in Lake County to get information about lead poisoning and can be contacted at 263-3949.
