“Fire Prevention Awareness Week” was earlier this month and now we have an initiative on the ballot to allow the sale and use of fireworks within Lakeport city limits! Like many others, I have always supported our youth, including participating in the Safeway e-scrip program and purchasing the cookies, candy, calendars, magazines and wrapping paper the kids sell as fundraisers.

I too sold such products as a child and realize the importance of raising money for youth programs. But selling this dangerous product, fireworks, does not make sense. It is time for the groups who profit from these sales to find other ways to support their programs. Lakeport city officials previously made an informed decision for the greater good that banned fireworks sales here. And the fire department wholly concurred. Have we already forgotten the California conflagration last year when there were over 800 fires burning at once and smoke and ash filled the sky?

I am personally well aware of the danger of fireworks. Some years ago, a field adjacent to our home caught fire when people were lighting fireworks there. It was a frightening experience that could have had an horrific impact on the lives of nearby residents. Luckily, the quick response of firefighters saved our homes. Fellow citizens, please reject the emotional advertising for this initiative that would put you, your neighbors, and our firefighters at risk. There are other fundraising options youth groups can and should pursue. Vote no on measure C.
