LAKEPORT — It”s hard enough to play perennial North Central League I South girls” soccer powerhouse St. Vincent when at full strength let alone one player down, but that”s exactly the task that befell the Clear Lake Cardinals on Tuesday in Lakeport.
Trailing 3-0 in the first half, Clear Lake lost keeper Mari Jordan to a red card and had to play the remainder of the game with only 10 players.
“That”s not exactly a recipe for success,” Clear Lake co-coach Paul Larrea said of the Cardinals” 9-0 loss, one that guarantees the Cardinals (1-4-1, 6-10-1) won”t post a winning record in league play for the first time in many years.
St. Vincent (6-0) led 4-0 by the end of the first half.
Jordan was ejected following a collision with a St. Vincent player. Both players received cards from an official ? Jordan red and the St. Vincent player yellow.
“I don”t know why Mari got a red card and their player got only a yellow,” Larrea said.
Along with being ejected from the game, Jordan will have to sit out the Cardinals” next game.
“St. Vincent passes the ball extremely well ? they know they”re at on the field,” Larrea said. “You need to keep them wide on the field. If they get a step on you inside they”re gone. They have very talented players in the middle of the field.”
Sophomore Chelo Lundquist-Krag replaced Jordan in the net and did a good job given her limited experience there, according to Larrea.
“I thought she did a good job,” Larrea said.
