Willits def. Middletown
At Middletown, Willits kept pace with Kelseyville atop the NCL I North standings by beating Middletown 25-18, 25-21, 25-11. Willits improved to 3-1 with its win while Middletown (2-2) fell into a third-place tie with Lower Lake (2-2) at the midway point of the league race.
“We just didn”t do a lot of hitting,” Middletown coach Jennifer Breiner said. “We didn”t have a lot of kills like we usually do.”
Kayla Robinson”s six kills led the Mustangs while Morgan D”Amico added five kills, three blocks and two aces. Jenny McGee had four kills.
“She played really well at middle,” Breiner said of D”Amico.
Like the rest of the county”s teams, the Mustangs are battling the flu bug and were missing a starter. Other players were at less than 100 percent, according to Breiner.
The Mustangs are home tonight to play NCL I South leader St. Helena in an interlock match.
Lower Lake def. Clear Lake
At Lakeport, the Lower Lake Trojans defeated the Clear Lake Cardinals 25-17, 25-15, 25-22 in NCL I interlock action.
“We can”t get healthy,” Clear Lake coach Marci Psalmonds said of the flu bug which has hit the school hard in recent weeks. “It”s horrible, everybody”s sick.”
Even so, Psalmonds said the Trojans outplayed the Cardinals.
“They deserved to win,” Psalmonds said. “They dug up some balls I couldn”t believe they got to. They”re a scrappy team.”
For Clear Lake, Vanessa Tullos led the way with 13 kills and eight digs. Riley Gabehart added seven kills and setter Katie Reynolds had 19 assists.
The Cardinals host undefeated NCL I South leader St. Helena on Thursday.
Tashee Denson”s 10 kills powered a Lower Lake attack that also received seven kills from Amber Daniels and six from Veronica Wilder. April White had three blocks.
“We were a halfway decent passing team tonight,” Lower Lake coach Vanessa Udy said. “Once we get the ball to the setter we”re a pretty good hitting team.”
The Trojans open the second half of their NCL I North schedule at home Thursday against Fort Bragg.
