The cold and flu season is with us this year with more than the usual dangers because of the additional threat of swine flu, the first pandemic condition to appear in many years. As the Thanksgiving and Christmas seasons approach, life becomes more stressful for many of us.

Regular and thorough hand washing has always been the best protection against germs and disease but, when that is not possible, hand sanitizer makes a good substitute and we can keep a bottle in our cars. Local stores providing hand sanitizer dispensers are to be commended for this precaution and it should be extended to all retail outlets and public facilities such as libraries, thrift shops, social services and, the most likely to be contagious areas, the waiting rooms in hospitals and medical offices.

It is only by constant vigilance that we can avoid or lessen the threat of the diseases that are present now.
