MIDDLETOWN — Capping their best regular season ever, the Middletown Mustangs shut out the Willits Wolverines 3-0 on Thursday to wrap up a perfect North Central League I North varsity girls” soccer season at Middletown High School.

Middletown finishes 8-0 in the North and 16-1 for the regular season and will learn on Sunday who it will play in the North Coast Section playoffs, which begin next week. If the Mustangs get a first-round bye, which is likely, they wouldn”t play until a week from Saturday.

Middletown”s record — both league and overall — was adjusted earlier in the week because Fort Bragg had to forfeit a 0-0 tie with the Mustangs on Oct. 20 in Fort Bragg. The Timberwolves used two ineligible players in that game, according to Middletown coach Louise Owens, who said her team”s 16 victories is a single-season record at the school.

“It”s a fantastic feeling, the girls are thrilled,” Owens said of Middletown”s third league championship in four seasons.

Against Willits, Emily Reed scored in the first half and teammates Kiley Agapoff and Brittany Cash added second-half insurance goals. Cash, Kelly Wilkinson and Amber Preusser had assists.

“We”ll just wait until Sunday to see what happens,” Owens said of the NCS at-large and seeding meeting.

The Mustangs could have starter Natalie Diaz back in time for the playoffs, according to Owens.

Middletown reached the semifinal round in last year”s playoffs and would like to reach the finals this season, according to Owens.

“That would be very, very exciting,” she said.
