It was the season finale for the Cougars (0-8, 7-10) and first-year coach Mike Sheets.
“It was a good fight by both teams,” Sheets said. “It was just one of those games where everybody was on their toes.”
Upper Lake”s four seniors — Ayala, Courtney Harvilla, Laura Wold and Alex Driskell — were honored during the game. Another team member, Amanda McQueen, sang the national anthem.
St. Helena snapped a 4-4 tie with five minutes remaining. The game was knotted at 3 after one half.

Clear Lake 8, Lower Lake 0
At Lakeport, the Clear Lake Cardinals finished up their regular season with an interlock victory over the Lower Lake Trojans.
Clear Lake (9-10-3) can still reach next week”s playoffs as an at-large team. The field will be set on Sunday.
Elana Tipton scored five times for Clear Lake and she also had an assist. Savannah DeKeyer added two goals and Megan MacDonald had another. Mari Jordan came out of the keeper”s box and had two assists.
“We played with a lot of energy,” Clear Lake coach Paul Larrea said.
Clear Lake”s Logan Brodnansky had to leave the game midway through the second half with an eye injury, the result of a collision with a Lower Lake player.
Boys” soccer
Clear Lake 2, Lower Lake 2 (tie)
At Lakeport, Clear Lake and Lower Lake closed out their seasons with a tie.
Adrian Rodriguez and Ivan Sanchez scored for the Cardinals (3-7-3), while Leopoldo Arroyo and Julian Llamas had goals for Lower Lake.
Clear Lake first-year coach Cris Cortez said he hasn”t decided if he”ll return next season.
Fort Bragg 4, Kelseyville 1
At Fort Bragg, the Fort Bragg Timberwolves wrapped up the NCL I North title by beating the Kelseyville Knights.
Kelseyville closes out the regular season at 4-2-2 in league and 9-4-3 overall.
Fort Bragg had a 4-0 lead before Oscar Lopez scored in the game”s final minutes with an assist from Juan Ninche.
“We just couldn”t control the ball today,” Kelseyville coach Eduardo Ledesma said.
Kelseyville will apply for an at-large berth in next week”s North Coast Section playoffs.
Willits 3, Middletown 0
At Willits, Willits shut out Middletown in the NCL I North finale for both teams.
Middletown shots hit the frame twice during the game.
“We played with some bad luck,” Middletown coach Jivan Dicovski said.
Standouts for the Mustangs were Myles Moffat and sweeper Mark August, according to Dicovski.
Volleyball
Clear Lake def. Upper Lake
At Lakeport, Vanessa Tullos had 16 kills and 14 digs as the Clear Lake Cardinals swept Upper Lake 25-19, 25-23, 25-16 in NCL I South volleyball action.
Jessica Asbury added four kills and setter Katie Reynolds had 24 assists.
“She did pretty well distributing the ball tonight,” Clear Lake coach Marci Psalmonds said of Reynolds, a senior.
Katherine Edmonds had three kills and a team-best 12 digs for Upper Lake.
“We couldn”t put the ball down tonight,” Upper Lake coach Sandy Coatney said.
Kelseyville def. Middletown
At Kelseyville, after dropping the first game to Middletown, the Kelseyville Knights came roaring back to beat the Mustangs 19-25, 25-8, 25-11, 25-12 in NCL I North play.
“We played really well tonight,” Kelseyville coach Donelle McCallister said.
Kendra Schwegerl pounded out 10 kills and had nine digs for the Knights, while Skyler Olsen added eight kills and four aces. Setter Chelsea DeJohn had 26 assists.
Kayla Robinson”s 10 kills paced Middletown. Haley Tallman and Jenny McGee added six kills apiece.
“They played great in the first game,” Middletown coach Jennifer Breiner said of the Mustangs. “We had an awful second game and they couldn”t get past it.”
JV volleyball
Willits def. Lower Lake
Willits handed Lower Lake”s JV volleyball squad its first NCL I North setback with a 22-25, 25-20, 15-10 win.
Kelsie Shoffeitt had four kills and five service points for Lower Lake (6-1).
Willits is now 5-1.
