Measure C will help our children ? it is as simple as that. Funds from selling fireworks help support two local booster clubs, a swim team and a scholarship pageant. In these hard economic times, schools and sports programs are being hit hard with budget cuts.
The Lakeport booster clubs help support transportation, school programs, school supplies, sports programs and the arts. The Lake County Channel Cats help pay expenses for the city pool and the Miss Lake County Pageant is the largest scholarship program for women in the State of California.
All of these important entities rely on the sale of fireworks to support their programs. They have tried to raise funds in other areas ? I have attended pancake breakfasts, bingo nights and bought candy and magazines from these groups.
How can we not support our children? From news reports that I have read, there were only two trash can fires caused by safe and sane fireworks in the history of selling fireworks in Lakeport. This sounds like fires caused by people trying to safely dispose of their fireworks. According to one report, it cost about $300 to put out these two fires.
There is no proof that a fire will be caused by legalizing safe and sane fireworks. Scare tactics shouldn”t sway the public to not vote for a fundraiser that will do nothing but benefit our children.
