LAKEPORT ?Mendocino College representatives told Lakeport City Council members Tuesday they want to keep the Lake Center on Parallel Drive in Lakeport.
“College benefits for both the city and the county helped us make the decision to come to Lakeport,” said Mike Adams, director of facilities planning for the Mendocino-Lake Community College District.
The council approved a draft memorandum of understanding to construct the Lake Center on Parallel Drive between the city and the college 4-0 with councilman Rob Rumfelt absent.
Kathy Lehner, superintendent of the district, told the council that because of cost sharing that lowered prices, the college wants to make an agreement with the city. Mendocino College made an offer to buy the Parallel Drive site, which the owner accepted.
The college offered to pay for half of the estimated $550,000 construction costs to build a water main to the site and provide the money up front. The city would pay back its share with no interest during five years.
Jan Bruns, director of the Lakeport Main Street Association, presented about 1,200 signatures to the council that support keeping the Lake Center in Lakeport.
The council also unanimously voted to reject the offer to sell Dutch Harbor to the state for the new Lake County Courthouse.
Council members voted 4-0 to select RAU and Associates to design phase 2 of the Downtown Improvement Phase Project after staff explained how engineering design firms must be chosen.
