FORT BRAGG — Avenging a 1-0 loss to Fort Bragg during the regular season, the Clear Lake Cardinals beat the host Timberwolves in a shootout Wednesday to advance to the next round of the North Coast Section Division III girls” playoffs.
Tied 2-2 after regulation, the two teams battled through two scoreless overtime periods before the Cardinals prevailed 4-3 in the shootout.
Next up for Clear Lake, the 12th seed in the original 12-team field, is No. 4 Ferndale (7-7-1) on Saturday in the quarterfinal round at Fortuna High School. The action begins at 7 p.m.
Clear Lake (10-10-3) led 2-0 after the first half thanks to goals by Elena Tipton and Telila Paskaly. Fort Bragg (12-7-5) pulled even with two goals in the second half.
“We played our hearts out,” Clear Lake senior defender Rachel Thornton said. “It was our best game of the season.”
Savannah DeKeyser and Megan MacDonald had assists for Clear Lake.
In others first-round games on Wednesday, St. Helena beat St. Ber-nard 2-0, Roseland Prep defeated Cloverdale 4-2, and Calistoga edged Rincon Valley 3-2.
St. Helena travels to No. 3 Middletown on Saturday night in another quarterfinal-round game.
