When I opened the paper at breakfast, I was greeted by a disturbing image, a mortally injured elk with its head still raised. My first reaction was how objectionable the image was; we know this happens, but would rather not have to see it.
After reading Mandy Feder in “Ink Out Loud” explain the reason, I understand why it was shown. If that image makes one person aware of the animals, and avoids a similar incident, it”s more than worth it.
In the same article Mandy expresses concern that more compassion was expressed for the animal than for the human that was hogtied, shot and left to die. I”m sure that had the human victim been photographed and displayed on the front page in gory detail, the reaction would have been profound. I would offer that animal victims are always and without question innocent. I generalize when I say: Human victims sometimes put themselves at risk through bad choices.
