Katy Sweeny”s article on Nov. 5, “An issue of equality,” was unsettling. If Ms. Sweeny advocates for gay marriage that is her right just as it is the right of the opposers to oppose.
It is unconscionable that the voters would be degraded with the remarks “It seems the Maine Legislature and California Supreme Court has more sense than voters” and “Why would anyone want to act and vote irrationally?” I think all voters should have the freedom to vote their conscience. However, if a person cannot make up their mind and/or are not confident or firm in their belief, they should not vote. And clearly, the remarks were directed to the opposing voters. I don”t think Ms. Sweeny would appreciate being told she was unscrupulous.
I know we”ve all heard the arguments, but it bears a repeat here. Some of the opposers are sincere Christians who see the issue on moral grounds and not an equality issue. The Bible calls homosexuality an abomination and in “Strong”s Concordance” abomination is defined as “something disgusting (morally), i.e. an abhorrence.” The Bible also condemns beastiality and 99.9 percent of the people understand that and see that as disgusting, yet do not believe the words homosexuality and disgusting belong in the same sentence. Because there are more non-Christians than Christians?
You say there are no excuses for denying humans equal rights. Generally there are no excuses, but the homosexual community already has the same rights as every other person ? except marriage. And for Christians, what Jesus said on the issue is what matters. It is written in stone.
Also, I know the “Catholic Catechism” book has stated that homosexual acts are acts of grave depravity. That this inclination is objectively disordered constitutes for most of them a trial. That they can and should gradually and resolutely approach Christian perfection. Also that homosexual persons are called to chastity. And also of importance, that they must be accepted with respect, compassion and sensitivity. Even though I am not Catholic, I do agree with these statements. So some churches do see homosexuality as a sin. Also important to know is that we should only hate the sin and not the sinner. But please let the voters make up their own mind.
