PETALUMA — Kelseyville scored all its points in the first half, then held on for dear life down the stretch while beating the St. Vincent Mustangs 22-18 in a North Central League I interlock junior varsity football game on Saturday in Petaluma.
The Knights (3-6) stopped the Mustangs on downs late in the fourth quarter at the Kelseyville 20 before running out the clock.
“We bent but didn”t break and I was proud of the defense as we had trouble moving the ball in the second half,” Kelseyville coach Rob Ishihara said.
Running back Geno Poloni accounted all of the Knights” points with three touchdown runs and a pair of two-point conversion runs. He gained 123 yards on 21 carries.
“The offensive line did a great job blocking for Geno for the most part and he did the rest,” Ishihara said.
Devin Baker added 53 yards on 10 carries.
On defense, Steven Beck led the way with seven tackles and Reggie Hoaglan had five. Greg Fricker had an interception late in the first half to stop a St. Vincent drive, and Jacob Martinec intercepted a pass and blocked an extra-point kick.
“We haven”t seen the spread offense all season but our kids did a fairly good job for the most part,” Ishihara said of the Knights” defense.
Kelseyville is home Friday night to close out its season against Fort Bragg.
