WILLITS — Jake Davis ran for three touchdowns and Kyle Harmyk passed for two others on Friday night as the Middletown Mustangs put an exclamation point on their North Central League I North title run with a 49-0 victory over the Willits Wolverines in Willits.

Middletown (4-0, 9-1) moves on to the North Coast Section playoffs as the undisputed North champion, but the Mustangs won”t know until Sunday where they”ve been seeded in the Division IV field, or even if they play next week or have a first-round bye — chances are it”s the latter.

“I was really pleased with the effort,” Middletown coach Bill Foltmer said. “Our kids played real well tonight. As the game went on our defense got better.”

Foltmer also had high praise for the Wolverines (2-2, 3-7), who were trying to earn some share of the league title with a win. “I was really impressed with the Willits kids,” Foltmer said. “They played hard the whole way and they were physical.”

Willits” only threat on offense came on its first possession as it drove to the Middletown 30-yard line before running out of downs.

“They worked the clock and got like three first downs,” Foltmer said.

Middletown came back with a long drive capped by the first of Davis” three touchdowns on the night, a 2-yard run to make it 7-0 as Danny Beckwith kicked the extra point.

“We kind of settled in after that,” Foltmer said. “We moved the ball all game.”

The Mustangs added 21 more points in the second quarter for a 28-0 halftime lead. Beckwith scored on a 20-yard pass from Harmyk, Davis added a 4-yard run, and Dylan Galusha caught a 25-yard TD pass from Harmyk

Max Dixon scored on a 13-yard run in the third quarter, part of his 106-yard night, and Davis broke off a 25-yard run later in the quarter to make it 42-0.

David Pike”s 2-yard run in the fourth quarter closed out the scoring.

Anchoring the Middletown defense were tackle Luke Parker, end Tyler Hicks and linebacker Davis.

“All three of them had an exceptional game,” Foltmer said.

The offense was a collective effort, according to Foltmer. “The entire offense played very well.”

Middletown has won three of the last four North titles.

Middletown”s JVs wrapped up the undisputed North championship as well with a 35-6 victory.
