NICE ? Two children called 9-1-1 after seeing someone stabbing a man at about 5:20 p.m. Monday in front of Ace Hardware in Nice.

Lake County Sheriff”s officers responded but couldn”t find a victim or any suspects, Capt. Jim Bauman of LCSO said. Officers then interviewed the children.

About 6 p.m., officers learned Michael Maitland, 38, of Middletown checked into Sutter Lakeside Hospital for superficial stab wounds, Bauman said.

Maitland told officers he was getting a ride home from Robinson Rancheria Resort & Casino with someone named Paul when they stopped in Nice, Bauman said. Paul got out and “went to some guy”s house,” Maitland said to sheriff”s officers. Someone punched Maitland through the open truck window. Maitland was dazed, got punched a few times and then someone stabbed him in the upper right back.

None of Maitland”s wounds were life threatening, but Bauman said he didn”t know the man”s medical condition.

Maitland told sheriff”s officers he didn”t see his assailant, didn”t know why someone would attack him and asked the department not to investigate the case, Bauman said.

Bauman didn”t know if Maitland or Paul had won money at Robinson Rancheria and officers don”t know of a motive, he said.

The children didn”t know Maitland or the suspect, Bauman said.
