SANTA ROSA — Bouncing back from a 6-3, 6-0 loss to No. 2 seed Laura Posylkin of San Marin High School in the semifinals, Middletown High School sophomore Miriam Lane beat No. 3 seed Namrata Sher of Mission San Jose 7-6 (7-3), 6-2 in the third-place match Wednesday at the North Coast Section Girls” Tennis Championships at Santa Rosa High School.
Lane, making her first appearance in the NCS tournament, lost to the hot hand at this year”s competition as Posylkin went on to upset No. 1 seed Brooke Irish of Amador Valley 6-3, 6-1 in the championship match. Irish had earlier defeated Sher 6-4, 6-2 to reach the finals.
Lane won the Coastal Mountain Conference girls” singles title last spring as a freshman. CMC teams such as Middletown play girls” and boys” tennis in the spring while the remainder of the section plays girls” tennis in the fall.
Although unseeded in the original 16-player field, Lane beat two seeded players while posting a 3-1 record at this year”s tournament. During her two matches on Tuesday, Lane beat No. 4 seed Chloe Dobbert of Carondelet in the opening round. She was the only Redwood Empire player to advance out of Tuesday”s quarterfinal round.
Lane isn”t quite done with her fall sports season. An accomplished cross country runner, she travels to Hayward on Saturday to compete in the North Coast Section Championships.
