LOWER LAKE — So much for knocking the rust loose.
Playing their first game of the season, the Lower Lake Trojans exceeded coach Marty Udy”s expectations in most if not all areas while beating the Rincon Valley Christian Eagles 74-57 in a non-league varsity boys” basketball game on Tuesday night in Lower Lake.
“Overall it was our scrappiness and defensive effort that I was the happiest with,” Udy said. “I was real happy with our effort at both ends of the floor.”
Forrest Davis led the Trojans (1-0) with 24 points and quickly took control of the game in the paint.
“Forrest was a monster inside,” Udy said. “I don”t have his exact rebound total but it was pretty scary. If he had less than 20 I would be very surprised.”
Lower Lake cruised into halftime with a 34-21 lead.
“We weren”t just bombing 3s (3-pointers),” Udy said. “One of the things I chart is how we score. There are eight different ways we can score and we scored in all eight.”
One of those ways was at the free-throw line.
“We scored 18 points at the line,” Udy said.
Among the more gratifying aspects of the win, according to Udy, was the Trojans” attention to detail so early in the season.
“I thought we did a lot of little things well,” Udy said. “That usually doesn”t happen in your first game.”
Joining Davis in double figures were teammates George Novak with 13 points, including two 3-pointers, Joe Taylor with 11 points and Nick Steward with 10. Jaymen Richardson just missed with nine points.
T.J. Robert scored 22 points for visiting Rincon Valley Christian.
