MIDDLETOWN — Senior guard John Hays pumped in 17 points and the Middletown High School varsity boys” basketball team won its season opener by beating St. Bernard of Eureka 51-34 in a first-round game Thursday night at the St. Helena Tournament.
Middletown (1-0) plays either St. Helena or Calistoga tonight at 8:30 p.m. in the semifinals.
With most of the Mustangs only recently joining the team after Middletown”s participation in the North Coast Section Division IV football playoffs, head coach Mike Mullin said his squad was noticeably “rusty” on offense.
“We were better in the second half,” Mullin said. “The defense played well. I was pleased with that.”
Leading 23-14 at halftime, Middletown began to pull away in the third quarter and went on to outscore the Crusaders 17-9 in the period.
Chris Oatman didn”t score but did pull down a team-leading six rebounds in limited playing time. Bo Sheffer led the Mustangs with seven boards and John Wesley Davis had five.
“Chris didn”t play much (he”s still nursing a minor injury from football), but he did a good job when he was in there,” Mullin said.
Hays picked up a team-best five steals to go along with his 17 points. Sheffer and Jereomy Hoefer added four steals apiece.
